We are very happy to announce that Sui-Lee Wee is our new Asia business correspondent, covering corporate and economic stories across the region, with a focus on China.
Sui joins Business from International, where she was the Southeast Asia bureau chief overseeing coverage of 11 countries. A versatile reporter and writer, she moves seamlessly from one major story to the next. She broke news about how China supplied weapons to Cambodia for its border war against Thailand. She wrote about a Singaporean man accused of running a Ponzi scheme using luxury watches, people forced to work in scam centers in Cambodia and a former altar boy and abuse victim turned lawyer helping other victims of sexual abuse by Catholic priests in the Philippines. From Indonesia, she wrote about deforestation propelled by American demand for tropical wood used in motor homes.
Before starting at The Times in 2016 as a Beijing-based correspondent on the Business desk , Sui worked in Hong Kong and Beijing for Reuters. She was part of a team that won an Overseas Press Club award in 2016 for The Long Arm of China, a series that examined China's efforts to extend its influence beyond its borders.
At The Times, Sui was part of the team that won the 2021 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service for its coverage of the coronavirus pandemic. She was also part of a team that chronicled the Chinese government's crackdown on the country's Uyghur Muslim minority, a series that was named a Pulitzer finalist in 2020.
Sui lives in Bangkok with her husband and their two sons. When she's not cheering her boys on from the sidelines of their soccer games, she can be found at the gym working on her Muay Thai and deadlifts. She is also steadily improving her Thai and is usually scrambling to finish the reading for her monthly book club.
She will remain in Bangkok for the time being. Please join us in welcoming her back to Business.
