Choi Named UW President’s Distinguished Scholar

Hoon Choi

Hoon Choi, an incoming University of Wyoming assistant professor in chemical and biomedical engineering, has been named a President's Distinguished Scholar in recognition of his outstanding research contributions and leadership in sustainable chemical engineering and materials separations.

Choi is an internationally recognized chemical engineer whose work focuses on developing energy-efficient, scalable separation processes that support renewable energy systems, critical mineral recovery and a circular economy. His research spans lithium and rare earth element extraction, bioprocessing, lignin valorization and closed-loop plastics recycling, integrating advanced chromatography, adsorption and process modeling.

He has published extensively in leading journals, holds multiple patents related to critical materials and energy-efficient separations -- several licensed for commercial use -- and has received major honors, including the National Renewable Energy Laboratory's President's Award and Director's Award. His work directly advances national priorities in clean energy, critical materials security and sustainable manufacturing.

"Hoon demonstrates the innovation and real-world impact we seek to encourage through this program," says President Ed Seidel. "I'm happy to welcome him to UW as a President's Distinguished Scholar."

Choi will hold the title for three years and receive support for continued scholarly excellence.
