AHN Wexford Hospital Celebrates Fifth Anniversary

Milestone follows the hospital's third consecutive CMS 5-star overall rating, the only hospital in Western Pennsylvania to earn the distinction

WEXFORD, Pa. - Allegheny Health Network (AHN) is celebrating the fifth anniversary of AHN Wexford Hospital, a full-service, state-of-the-art facility that has become a leading health care destination for patients throughout northern Allegheny County and neighboring communities in Butler, Beaver, Lawrence and Mercer counties.

Opened to patients on Sept. 30, 2021, the 158-bed hospital features all-private inpatient rooms, a 24-bed emergency department with pediatric-capable rooms, advanced surgical suites with robotic technology, specialized intensive care services, women's and infants' care, and advanced diagnostic and imaging capabilities.

The hospital has welcomed more than 7,000 babies, performed 30,000 surgeries in its operating rooms, and cared for 150,000 patients in its emergency department since opening.

AHN Wexford has also earned numerous awards and recognitions since opening. Most notably, it is the only hospital in Western Pennsylvania to earn a 5-star rating overall from the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) in 2026, and it has maintained that 5-star distinction for three consecutive years. CMS determines a hospital's Overall Hospital Quality Star Rating by evaluating performance across five areas of quality, including mortality, safety of care, readmission, patient experience and timely/effective care.

It has also been recognized by Press Ganey for excellence in patient experience for four consecutive years, and earned Leapfrog's prestigious "Straight A" designation for consistently achieving the highest standards in patient safety.

The hospital has continually expanded its clinical capabilities over the past five years, providing patients with convenient access to advanced specialty services, including cancer care, cardiovascular care, neurosciences, orthopaedics, pulmonology, thoracic and vascular services, and more. Its state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization laboratory and hybrid operating rooms, equipped with advanced imaging technology, support advanced cardiac procedures and complex minimally invasive surgeries across a wide range of specialties.

Among AHN Wexford's most distinctive offerings is a comprehensive women's and infants' care program featuring the only labor and delivery unit in northern Allegheny County, along with high-risk obstetrical services and a Level II neonatal intensive care unit.

In 2023, the hospital significantly expanded its pediatric capabilities with the addition of high-quality orthopaedic, ENT and inpatient care for children with acute medical conditions, including specialized accommodations for neurodiverse patients. The hospital's emergency department also provides care to children, sparing parents from having to travel into the city when their child has emergent medical needs.

In total, the hospital employs about 800 individuals and is one of the largest employers in Pine Township. In addition to Dr. Klapper, the hospital's executive leaders include Steven J. Goodnow, DO, chief medical officer; Lisa Graper, MSN, RN, NE-BC, chief nursing officer; Adam Critchlow, chief operating officer; and Tom Hipkiss, chief financial officer.

The hospital is connected to the AHN Wexford Health + Wellness Pavilion which offers a wide array of outpatient health services, including primary care and multiple medical and surgical specialties. The pavilion hosts comprehensive centers for cancer treatment and women's health. It also includes an ambulatory surgery center, breast center, comprehensive cardiovascular services, advanced imaging and laboratory testing, walk-in express care and an onsite pharmacy.
