Free One-on-One Legacy Planning Support Helps Residents Protect, Preserve Assets
The Tulsa Financial Empowerment Center is now offering legacy planning services to Tulsans at no cost.
Done in partnership with the Cities for Financial Empowerment Fund, free legacy planning is a first-of-its kind service in Tulsa that will help residents with important estate planning to protect their families, avoid costly legal processes like probate, ensure their wishes are followed, and preserve their wealth.
"It has never been more important for families to protect and preserve what they've worked so hard to build," said Amber Guipttons, the City's Director of the Office of Financial Empowerment and Community Wealth. "Providing Legacy Planning as a free service gives every Tulsan both the opportunity and the access to secure their future."
Legacy planning services are available through the Goodwill FEC: https://www.goodwilltulsa.org/FEC
Services are also available through Tulsa Responds: https://www.tulsaresponds.org/FEC
Importance of Legacy Planning
Research shows that the majority of Americans own at least one asset - a bank account, a 401K, or a home - that is valuable today and likely to appreciate, but few have taken the steps necessary to secure those assets. Nearly 70% of Americans do not have a will or a broader legacy or estate plan.
By increasing access to information about topics like adding beneficiaries to accounts and creating essential documents such as wills and powers of attorney, this program will help people in Tulsa protect their assets for the future.
Financial Empowerment in Tulsa
Tulsa is one of dozens of cities and counties nationwide offering free financial counseling services through the FEC initiative. Professionally trained counselors provide one-on-one guidance to help individuals and families with low and moderate incomes manage their finances, pay down debt, increase savings, establish and build credit, access safe and affordable mainstream banking products - and now, protect and preserve their assets.
Since opening in 2020, the Tulsa FEC has supported more than 6,900 clients, helping them reduce $2,760,000 in debt and build $1,250,000 in savings.
"The Tulsa FEC counselors work hard to help clients build assets. With the addition of legacy planning services, counselors can help protect and preserve those assets for future generations", said Jonathan Mintz, President and CEO of the Cities for Financial Empowerment Fund. "We are thrilled to partner with The City of Tulsa and Mayor Nichols to provide these crucial services and ensure that legacy planning is available for everyone."
