The Deputy Minister of Defence, Major General Aruna Jayasekara (Retd), attended the customary commencement of work for the New Year and the taking of the government servants' oath at the Ministry of Defence this morning (01 January).
Addressing the gathering, the Deputy Minister emphasised the need for a collective effort in rebuilding the nation, highlighting that economic recovery and national security must progress in tandem. He also expressed sincere appreciation for the contributions made by all stakeholders during the recent natural disaster response.
The Defence Secretary, Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha (Retd), also addressed the event, reminding all present of the importance of unity and shared responsibility in rebuilding the country and working together for the betterment of the future.
During the ceremony, the State Minister hoisted the National Flag, followed by a two-minute silence observed in memory of the fallen war heroes. Thereafter, all employees of the Ministry took the government servants' oath.
Senior officials of the Defence Ministry, heads of institutions under the purview of the Ministry, senior officers of the Tri-Forces and Police, along with ministry staff, were present at the occasion.
