Schumer: Trump Promised Lower Costs-Then Stuck Families With The Bill

U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer today unveiled a new report from the U.S. Congress Joint Economic Committee showing that New York families have paid more than $4,500 extra for everyday essentials-including groceries, gas, housing, and healthcare-since President Trump took office. New Yorkers are bearing the cost of failed policies, including tariffs, cuts to vital programs like SNAP and Medicaid, and a reckless war in Iran that has driven up food and fuel prices, putting even greater strain on the budgets of Upstate New York families.

"New Yorkers are paying the price for President Trump's disastrous policies, including rash tariffs and a reckless war. From groceries and gas to housing and healthcare, families are being squeezed by rising costs," said Senator Schumer. "President Trump promised to lower costs, but instead, working- and middle-class families across Upstate New York are left to foot the bill and pay more while he pads his own bank account. We need real solutions that lower costs and deliver the relief people need-not the constant chaos, cost hikes, and corruption coming from the Trump administration."

According to district-by-district data, households in New York's 17th Congressional District have spent an estimated $122 million more on gas since the start of Trump's Iran war, with the average family paying an additional $504. Similar increases have affected neighboring communities, with families in NY-18 paying an estimated $535 more and those in NY-19 paying an estimated $547 more.

Schumer said, "Whether commuting to work, driving kids to summer camp, or making a trip to the grocery store, rising fuel costs from this reckless war are requiring families to stretch tight budgets."

Schumer has forced a series of votes on a war powers resolution, including this week, to end Trump's costly war and the ongoing chaos in the Straits of Hormuz that sent gas prices soaring.

Families are also facing shock at the checkout counter, where they are paying an estimated $310 more for groceries than they did a year ago. Since Trump took office, the average price of ground beef has climbed nearly every month, reaching a record high of almost $7 per pound. To help tackle these costs, Schumer introduced his Family Grocery and Farmer Relief Act, landmark legislation that would break up meatpacking monopolies, restore competition, cut out corporate greed, and deliver relief to families struggling to put food on the table.

Even after leaving the store, New Yorkers can't escape rising costs. Back at home, New York families have paid an estimated $983 more for housing costs, including rent and mortgage payments, since Trump took office, while also contending with record-high utility bills. To help address this crisis, Schumer championed the bipartisan ROAD to Housing Act, which President Trump then refused to sign into law. This legislation is a first step towards ending the housing affordability crisis and ensuring Americans don't have to break the bank to keep a roof over their head.

Despite President Trump's repeated pledges on the campaign trail that his administration would "end inflation" and bring down costs, Trump has instead sent prices through the roof. In recent months, Schumer has rolled out a series of plans to counter Trump's failed policies and lower the costs of housing, food, energy, and health care.
