The Permanent Representative of Antigua and Barbuda to the Organization of American States (OAS), Ronald Sanders, today assumed the Chairmanship of the Inter-American Council for Integral Development (CIDI) during a ceremony held at the headquarters of the hemispheric institution.
Ambassador Sanders announced that, under his leadership, he will seek to ensure that CIDI works as one team. "Multilateralism enables us to remain united despite our differences in size and level of development. That equality is the foundation of our credibility," said the Caribbean diplomat. Ambassador Sanders explained that his work plan will rest on three pillars: certainty, capacity, and capital. "Certainty, so that the rules can be trusted and cannot be broken at the will of any one person. Capacity, so that our workers and our businesses can seize opportunities. And capital, so that financing and infrastructure reach where they are needed most," added the Permanent Representative of Antigua and Barbuda.
The Permanent Representative of Uruguay and outgoing Chair of CIDI, Edison Lanza, highlighted among the achievements of his tenure "the recognition of energy as an essential element for development and the need to strengthen critical infrastructure across the Americas." "We leave the Chairmanship with the firm conviction that this Council has enormous potential and that the path toward integral development is a continuous one. The bonds of cooperation strengthened during this period are the foundation upon which we will continue building a more prosperous, resilient, and inclusive region," added the Uruguayan diplomat.
Ambassador Sanders' term will run through December 31, 2026. The CIDI Chairmanship rotates every six months among the OAS Member States. CIDI, one of the two councils that report directly to the OAS General Assembly, provides a platform for political dialogue and decision-making on social, economic, and sustainable development.
