SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV - Shepherd University welcomed 385 new students during summer orientation events. Incoming first-year and transfer students attended one-day sessions featuring morning and afternoon activities on June 9, 11, or 16, based on their major. Students attended one of three opportunities to visit campus, meet classmates and faculty, and experience being part of the Ram Fam for the first time.

"Summer Orientation is often a student's first opportunity to experience what it means to be part of the Shepherd community," said Hajra Malik, student success coach. "This year, incoming students were introduced to a new feature of orientation, the zone fair, designed to help students build connections before they ever step into a classroom."

The new structure included five areas of focus-strategy, connection, hospitality, wellness, and advising. The zones gave students a chance to move through campus and engage with different offices, learn about available resources, participate in activities, and have meaningful conversations with the people who will support them throughout their college journey.

Members of the A-Team, Shepherd's orientation leaders, guided new Rams through the process by answering questions, sharing experiences, and introducing them to campus life.

"For many students, these interactions transformed orientation from a day of information into a day of connection and belonging," said Malik. "Perhaps the most rewarding part of the experience was watching students arrive feeling uncertain and leave with a greater sense of confidence, familiarity, and excitement for the fall semester."

New students also received important information, including their class schedules, to help lay a foundation for their first year of college.

Meanwhile, parents and family members participated in sessions focused on the transition to college life. Families had the opportunity to learn about academic expectations, advising, financial aid, and billing processes, as well as the many resources available to support student success. These conversations helped families better understand the support systems available to students as they begin their Shepherd journey.

Another orientation event will take place on Thursday, August 7, for any incoming students who were unable to attend the June events.
