SACRAMENTO - Assemblymember Dawn Addis (D-Morro Bay), reacted to today's announcement that the Regent Slide portion of Highway 1 in Big Sur will reopen at noon today following nearly two years of closure:
"The reopening of Regent marks an important step forward for the hundreds of families and workers in Big Sur and the millions of people who visit California every year," said Addis "This turning point will help revive critical revenue, restore access to our state parks, support jobs, public safety, and economic stability for many of our residents."
The closure followed a series of severe winter storms that caused significant damage along Big Sur's coastline prompting Caltrans to undertake a multi-year structural repair project.
Governor Gavin Newsom also issued a statement marking the milestone:
"This reopening will bring much-needed relief to small businesses and families in Big Sur and the surrounding communities who have shown remarkable resilience and strength. I'm grateful to Caltrans crews for delivering Highway 1 ahead of schedule-deploying remotely controlled heavy equipment, stabilizing slopes with thousands of steel reinforcements drilled up to 60 feet deep, and using cutting-edge monitoring systems to overcome extraordinary geological challenges while keeping workers safe. This vital corridor is the gateway to California's coast and the lifeblood of the Big Sur economy-and today it's restored."
Dawn Addis was elected to the California State Assembly in 2022 to represent the coastal 30th Assembly District, which includes San Luis Obispo, Monterey, and Santa Cruz Counties. She is the Chair of the Assembly Budget Subcommittee 1 on Health.
