Nesting Bird Season Is Here!

Throughout San Rafael, the birds are settling down for some time to build nests and raise hatchlings. Nesting season spans from February through August and marks the time when migratory birds build nests, lay eggs, and raise their young.

Nesting can happen anywhere, including in our open spaces and near your homes. All of our vegetation management project sites are checked for nesting birds by qualified biologists before work starts. This additional step ensures we are not impacting birds during their critical nesting season. It is important for us to continue these projects through the summer to reduce wildfire risk in our open spaces and in the surrounding neighborhoods. By using experienced biologists we ensure compliance with State and Federal law as well as prevent any undue stress to Marin's diverse bird species.

We support residents doing work to prevent the effects of wildfire at home by removing vegetation and creating defensible space, but urge you to be particularly cautious during nesting bird season. Please make sure to check your trees and plants for bird nests before conducting work during this time.

Please visit our vegetation management project page for more information on our wildfire mitigation efforts.
