Washington, D.C. - Tomorrow, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) will lead Senate Democrats in forcing another War Powers Resolution vote to end Trump's reckless and costly Iran War. Leader Schumer released the following statement ahead of the vote:
Tomorrow, as American servicemembers remain under Iranian attack, Senate Democrats will force another vote to end Trump's dangerous, costly, and unnecessary war.
This will be the Senate's first War Powers vote since the American death toll rose to 18 and the number of wounded servicemembers likely to exceed 500.
"Eighteen Americans are dead. Hundreds more are wounded. And Donald Trump's response is to compare the death toll to Vietnam and boast that people are 'very impressed.' There is nothing impressive about sending Americans into an unauthorized war with no strategy, no endgame, and no definition of victory," said Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer. "Tomorrow, Senate Republicans must decide whether they will finally stand up for our servicemembers and end this war-or keep giving Donald Trump a blank check and own every terrible consequence that follows."
Rather than pause, reconsider his failed mission, or show concern for the servicemembers he sent into harm's way, President Trump dismissed the mounting casualties as low compared with Vietnam and declared that "people are very impressed with our military." That callous response from the commander-in-chief makes congressional action even more urgent.
American families are also paying the price. Gas has again climbed above $4 a gallon across the country as Trump's war drives up costs and threatens the global energy supply.
The American people have rejected this war. Yet Senate Republicans continue to rubber-stamp it-even as the casualties and costs mount and the president refuses to provide a credible strategy, an endgame, or any definition of victory.
Senator Chris Van Hollen's War Powers Resolution tomorrow will mark the twelfth vote Senate Democrats have forced in recent months to end the war. And twice, bipartisan majorities have voted to do exactly that.
Tomorrow, every Senate Republican must choose: stand up for American servicemembers and families-or give Donald Trump another blank check for a war with no end in sight.
Senate Democrats will keep forcing that choice until this war ends.
