The Marion County Board of County Commissioners officially recognized July as Parks and Recreation Month during Tuesday's regular meeting to celebrate the parks, programs, and professionals who help improve the quality of life for residents and visitors throughout the community.
The proclamation highlighted the vital role parks and recreation areas play in promoting healthy lifestyles, protecting natural resources, supporting youth development, expanding access to nature, and strengthening the local economy.
The observance aligns with the annual nationwide initiative led by the National Recreation and Park Association. This year's theme, The Power of Parks and Recreation, recognizes the many ways parks and recreation services enhance physical health, mental well-being, environmental stewardship, and community connection.
The county commission also recognized July 17 as Park and Recreation Professionals Day, honoring the dedicated employees who maintain Marion County's parks, preserve natural resources, organize recreational programs, and create welcoming spaces where residents of all ages can learn, play, and connect.
Throughout July, Marion County Parks & Recreation will celebrate by featuring local parks, programs, recreational facilities, and amenities through a special video series highlighting The Power of Parks and Recreation across Marion County.
Marion County Parks & Recreation manages a diverse system of community parks, sports complexes, trails, natural areas, and recreational facilities that provide opportunities for fitness, outdoor adventure, environmental education, and family-friendly activities throughout the year.
