Volusia County Emergency Medical Services is preparing to launch a new program that will allow crews to provide prehospital blood transfusions to qualifying trauma patients before they reach the hospital. With implementation anticipated in the coming weeks, EMS personnel are continuing to participate in simulation-based training to prepare for the new capability.

During the training, personnel work through simulated patient scenarios to practice procedures for identifying eligible patients, preparing blood products, and administering transfusions. The exercises allow crews to become familiar with the process before putting their training into practice in the field.

Once implemented, the prehospital whole-blood program will provide EMS personnel with another lifesaving tool when treating patients who have experienced significant blood loss. By making blood available during prehospital care, crews can begin this critical treatment sooner. Studies indicate that earlier access to blood transfusions can improve outcomes for certain trauma patients.

The County Council approved agreements earlier this year with Halifax Health and OneBlood to support the program's implementation. Through the partnerships, Halifax Health will assist with blood handling and logistics, while OneBlood will supply the blood products.
