Will Atlassian Stock Ever Get Back To Its Old High

Atlassian (TEAM) stock closed at its high in October 2021, and it currently trades at less than half that price. Investors and market watchers often treat that old close as a baseline for where the shares belong. So how much would Atlassian stock have to rise to close at that price again?

Atlassian Stock Needs A 120% Gain To Get Back To Its High

The shares must gain 120% from their latest close to reclaim that previous peak. The stock has fallen 54.6% from its high. Even if the climb took three years, recovering those losses would require an annual return of 30.1%.

Has Atlassian Stock Ever Gained 120% In Three Years?

The company has delivered that kind of performance before, but only in specific windows. Over the last ten years, analyzing every rolling three-year period that starts on a trading day, Atlassian stock gained 120% or more in 36% of those timeframes. A typical three-year period delivered a return of just 15%. Reaching the old high within three years means the stock needs one of its better runs of the past decade.

What Has Waiting Cost Atlassian Holders?

Investors who bought at the peak in October 2021 have now held the shares for five years. During that period, Atlassian stock is down 54.6% before dividends. Over the same timeline, the S&P 500 is up 69%, also before dividends. The direct drop in share price only tells part of the story. Those shareholders have also forfeited the returns they could have generated by placing the same capital in an index fund that tracks the S&P 500.

Is Atlassian The Same Business It Was Then?

Today, Atlassian operates at a much larger scale than it did at its peak in October 2021. Yet its operating margin has fallen, even as its net loss narrowed to $0.1 billion from $1.0 billion.

Atlassian At the high, October 2021 Now
Share price $458.13 $208.04
Revenue, last twelve months $2.2 billion $6.6 billion
Operating margin 8.3% 0.2%
Net income, last twelve months -$1.0 billion -$0.1 billion

Share prices are split-adjusted closes. Business figures are for the twelve months to the last reported fiscal quarter before each date.

The software provider, which sells Jira and Confluence, has nearly tripled its revenue since that prior high. Its operating margin moved in the opposite direction. Over the twelve months to June 2026, the operating margin fell to 0.2% from the 8.3% recorded during its peak. An investment made in October 2021 effectively bought a smaller business with a wider operating margin than today's enterprise.

Shareholders often ask when the stock will return to its former peak, measuring the firm as if it remains the same business investors bought in October 2021. The more pressing question focuses on valuation. Investors must decide what a company with nearly triple the sales and almost no operating profit is actually worth at today's price.

Does This Mean You Should Act On TEAM?

Our purpose is to inform you with unique data so you make the right investment decisions. That said, betting on a single stock is always risky, no matter which direction you choose.

There is a smarter approach. Since its inception, the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio has returned 105%, beating the benchmark that combines the three major indices - the S&P 500, S&P Mid-cap, and Russell 2000. And it did so without taking the concentrated risk that comes with do-it-yourself stock picking. If that is how you want to invest, the HQ Portfolio is the place to start.
