Tree Trimming/Tree Removal Project to Start in Marin, Sonoma Counties in May along US-101, State Route 1 and State Route 116

Schedule: Project begins Monday, May 11 at 9 a.m. on US-101 in Marin County

Marin County and Sonoma County - Caltrans scheduled to begin a tree trimming/ removal project in various locations along US-101, State Route 1 (Shoreline Highway) and State Route 116 in both counties.

  • The Southbound US-101 off-ramp at St. Vincent/Miller Creek in San Rafael is scheduled to be closed from Monday, May 11 to Wednesday, May 13 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Drivers should off-ramp at Lucas Valley/Smith Ranch Road, take a left at the light onto Lucas Valley Road, go down to the next light and take a right at Las Gallinas Avenue and go two blocks back to Miller Creek. The bus stop on the off-ramp at Miller Creek will be affected during work hours.

  • The Northbound US-101 off-ramp at South Novato Boulevard off-ramp is scheduled to be closed on Thursday, May 14, also from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Drivers should take Eastbound State Route 37 and exit at Marsh Road/Hanna Ranch Road and loop back onto Northbound US-101.

  • The Northbound US-101 off-ramp to Sausalito/Marin City is scheduled to be closed on Wednesday, May 20 and Thursday, May 21, also from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Drivers should take the next off-ramp at Mill Valley/Stinson Beach, go under the structure to the Southbound US-101 on-ramp to get onto Southbound US-101 and take the off-ramp to the Marin City/Sausalito. The bus stop on the off-ramp will be affected.

There will be lane closures along US-101 on Saturday, May 16 and Sunday, May 17 in other locations, but no ramp closures are scheduled.

All work is dependent on weather and other factors.

The removal of trees is to keep our roads as safe as possible for our travelers, and work will be overseen by a certified arborist working alongside Caltrans.

Tree removal locations on SR-1 and SR-116 will be announced at a later time. One-way traffic control will be utilized on those highways.

Caltrans will activate Changeable Message Signs (CMS) to help the public navigate the detours.

The project is expected to conclude around September 2026.
