The Department of Physiology invites you our final seminar of 2025 TODAY!
Thursday, Dec. 18 - Hosted by Dr. Gadiparthi N. Rao
We Are Pleased To Announce Our Special Guest From University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine
…will be presenting his seminar titled "Cytochrome B5 reductase Heme-dependent and Independent Signaling in Vascular Biology and Disease" today from 3:30-5 p.m. in the Cancer Research Building Auditorium (19 S. Manassas St., Room 114). Refreshments will be provided.
Summary:
Dr. Straub's presentation will provide a brief overview of our research spanning the past 15 years, focused on elucidating the roles of the cytochrome b5 reductase enzyme family in cardiovascular physiology and disease. He will also present new, unpublished findings that define a novel function for CYB5R1 as a coenzyme Q reductase that modulates ferroptosis and contributes to the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. He will also discuss his lab's ongoing efforts to develop a first-in-class small-molecule therapeutic targeting this pathway to reverse cardiovascular disease.
Brief Bio:
Dr. Adam Straub is a basic scientist specializing in redox signaling mechanisms in cardiovascular physiology and disease. He has authored 77 peer-reviewed original research articles and 27 review articles, with publications in high-impact journals such as Nature, Nature Medicine, Blood, Journal of Clinical Investigation, Circulation, Circulation Research, Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology, and Journal of Biological Chemistry. His research has been supported by independent extramural funding, including an EPA STAR predoctoral fellowship, NIH/NHLBI T32 and F32 fellowships, a NIH/NHLBI K99/R00 Pathway to Independence Award, multiple NIH/NHLBI R01 grants, the NIH/NHLBI R35 Emerging Investigator Award, an AHA Established Investigator Award, and industry-funded grants. Dr. Straub is a charter member and co-chair of the Integrated Vascular Physiology and Pathophysiology (IVPP) study section, has chaired multiple scientific conferences, and is an active member of several professional societies in his field. His research contributions have been recognized by the American Heart Association (AHA), where he was a finalist for the ATVB Irvine H. Page Young Investigator Research Award, a finalist for the BCVS Outstanding Early Career Investigator Award, and a recipient of both the Harry Goldblatt Award from the AHA Council on Hypertension and the Mid-Career Research Award from the AHA Council on Hypertension. In addition to his research, Dr. Straub is deeply committed to mentorship and career development. He has served on the AHA ATVB Early Career Committee and the AHA Council on Hypertension CHAMP Council, supporting early-career scientists and trainees. His dedication to mentoring was recognized with the 2022 William E. Brown Outstanding Medical Scientist Training Program Mentor Award from the University of Pittsburgh. To date, he has mentored or co-mentored 17 postdoctoral researchers, clinical fellows, and junior faculty, 11 graduate students, and 11 undergraduate students.
