The EFTA Surveillance Authority (ESA) has today adopted a decision on the allocation of European Emission Trading System (ETS) allowances to airlines for the verified volumes of sustainable aviation fuels used in 2024.
Based on calculations by national authorities, the decision marks an important step in implementing the new ETS support mechanism designed to accelerate the use of sustainable aviation fuels across the EEA.
The latest revision to the ETS Directive introduced a dedicated support system to help close the price gap between fossil kerosene and sustainable aviation fuels used on flights covered by effective carbon pricing under the ETS. The system applies from 2024 onwards.
A total of 20 million ETS allowances, worth around EUR 1.5 billion, at an allowance price of EUR 75 each, are set aside for this purpose across the EEA in the period up to 2030. In the first year of application, ETS allowances were distributed to operators across the EEA, including two operators in Norway.
