Reps. Kim Schofield, Sandra Scott and Robert Flournoy, Jr. Recognize September as Alopecia Awareness Month and Honor Monee’ Sanders

ATLANTA - State Representatives Kim Schofield (D-Atlanta), Sandra Scott (D-Rex) and Robert Flournoy, Jr. (D-Hampton) recently recognized September as Alopecia Awareness Month, bringing attention to individuals and families impacted by alopecia, an autoimmune disease that causes hair loss. The representatives also recognized Monee' Sanders, who they noted made history at 19 years old as the first Black woman in the world to establish a nonprofit dedicated to autoimmune diseases.

"Alopecia Awareness Month is about shining a light on a condition that is often overlooked and misunderstood," said Rep. Schofield. "Monee' Sanders embodies courage and leadership, giving a voice to those impacted and inspiring action to bring better resources and care to communities."

"Monee's work reminds us that advocacy and compassion can create lasting change," said Rep. Scott. "Her efforts are helping to build a more inclusive and supportive future for those living with autoimmune diseases."

"As an alopecia survivor, and with my wife currently living with alopecia, I know firsthand the importance of awareness, compassion and support," said Rep. Flournoy, Jr. "Monee' Sanders' leadership gives hope and strength to families like mine across Georgia and beyond."

Monee' Sanders' organization, Alopecian Beauty Co., provides education, resources and support for those affected by alopecia, lupus and cancer. Through programs like the BioDiscover Youth Initiative, Sanders has created pathways for underserved youth to pursue STEM careers and leadership roles, while also advancing access to equitable healthcare for families across Georgia and beyond.

The representatives encourage the public to learn more about alopecia and available resources by visiting https://alopecianbeautyco.org/.
