The Sumter County Board of County Commissioners is proud to highlight the recent implementation of outdoor recreation and wellness enhancements across multiple parks. Through several projects completed this year, the County is elevating recreational experiences, improving accessibility, and ensuring that local parks continue to serve residents positively for years to come.
The County allocated funding for upgrades that included an upgraded restroom structure at Coleman Landing, a state-of-the-art 18-hole disc golf course at Lake Okahumpka Park, and a fleet of new canoes, available for use at Lake Miona Park, Lake Okahumpka Park, Marsh Bend Outlet Park, and Shady Brook Greenway Park. The improvements were initially identified based on park assessments, community feedback, and priorities outlined in Sumter County's Strategic Plans.
"Our parks have a lot to offer our residents and visitors," said Freddie Fudge, Facilities and Parks Manager. "By investing in these upgrades, we're ensuring residents of all ages can enjoy quality outdoor spaces that promote health, connection, and a sense of community."
This year's park improvement projects started with the launch of a new disc golf course at Lake Okahumpka Park in June. Upgrades doubled the course in size, scaling it from a 9-hole course to an 18-hole course, and included the addition of two baskets per hole, new golf tees, and concrete tee pads. To further support summer recreation activities, Sumter County replaced older canoes with 12 new tandem canoes, enabling residents to explore its waterways safely and comfortably at no cost. Finally, the restroom structure at Coleman Landing, funded by the Boater Improvement Fund, replaced a rented portable toilet. The new addition is making it easier for everyone to prioritize their health and hygiene practices while enjoying the green space.
The success of these park projects is highly attributed to the skillful coordination and execution of Facilities and Parks. We highly encourage residents to see the upgrades firsthand and make new memories at our parks.
