Hoyer: Those Who Want the Government to Stay Open and Operating Don't Threaten to Purge the Very People Who Make It Work

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement in response to a leaked memo from the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) that directs federal agencies to draft plans for mass layoffs ahead of a potential government shutdown:

"Since Donald Trump took office, his administration has waged a crusade against our federal workers. His OMB Director, Russell Vought, openly stated their intent to make federal workers feel like 'like villains' and to 'put them in trauma.' That is what this administration has done these past nine months by purging federal workers, transferring them across the country on a moment's notice, and subjecting them to political loyalty tests. In the process, the administration has disrupted the vital services federal workers provide to the American people. These are patriotic Americans who care for veterans, who research pediatric cancer, who ensure our food is safe, who keep our country safe from threats both foreign and domestic, and who do so much more to make our government function no matter who is president.

"Vought's memo threatening to pursue large-scale Reductions in Force in our federal agencies in the event of a shutdown is part of his campaign to vilify and traumatize those who serve our nation. Federal workers aren't political pawns; they're patriots. Those who want the government to stay open and operating don't threaten to purge the very people who make it work."
