Some Residents to Get New Trash or Recycling Pick Up Day

The City's waste and recycling collection contractor Waste Connections is updating some households' pick-up schedules starting in October.

Waste Connections' goal is to collect more households' trash and recycling on the same pickup day. Beginning Monday, Oct. 5, 2026, approximately 19,000 Knoxville households will change their every-other-week recycling day, with 2,800 households changing their weekly garbage pickup day.

"This change will benefit neighbors and lead to cleaner neighborhoods," says City of Knoxville Waste and Resources Manager Makenzie Read. "Residents with the same recycling and waste collection day will make fewer trips putting their carts on the curb. The same day of the week makes it easier to remember as well, leading to fewer missed pickups."

Waste Connections mailed notices to customers whose service days will change. They have also sent notifications via the Waste Connect mobile app, which delivers service updates and collection reminders to users who have notifications enabled.

"We appreciate the patience and cooperation of our customers as we make these changes to enhance collection services," said a Waste Connections representative. "We're proud to serve our community."

Not sure if your household is affected? Residents are encouraged to review their email and/or mobile app notifications and place trash and recycling carts at the curb on the new collection day during the week of Oct. 5, 2026.

Customers who receive backdoor pickup services will not be affected by any changes, nor will downtown residents, whose solid waste is collected by City of Knoxville Public Service crews.

During the transition, Waste Connections will be available to provide additional customer support by phone at 865-522-8161 and online at https://waste-connections.hatchable.site/.

Residents can also call 311 (865-215-4311) to request information or use the City's online lookup tool at KnoxvilleTN.gov/ServiceAndSort to view both their current collection day and their new collection day.
