Cedars-Sinai Experts Present Aging Research at GSA 2025

Experts from Cedars-Sinai's Center for Translational Geroscience and Geriatrics Program will present research and clinical care advances in aging during the Gerontological Society of America's (GSA) 2025 Annual Scientific Meeting Nov. 12-15 in Boston.

"This annual conference offers experts in aging an opportunity to learn about the latest advances and trends in research and clinical care-ultimately allowing us to better serve our patients and the broader aging population," said Sara Espinoza, MD , director of the Center for Translational Geroscience and a Gerontological Society of America fellow.

Espinoza will participate in two symposiums-"Testing the Geroscience Hypothesis" and "Interventions in Geroscience."

Espinoza also leads the newly established Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence Center in Los Angeles , a collaboration with UCLA and the University of Southern California.

Cedars-Sinai is recognized as an Age-Friendly Health System by The John A. Hartford Foundation and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, in partnership with the American Hospital Association and the Catholic Health Association of the United States. The designation was extended earlier this year to the Ruth and Harry Roman Emergency Department at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

"Our commitment to providing the highest-quality care informs our research and our drive to develop clinical innovations to better meet the needs of aging adults," said Sonja Rosen, MD , chief of Geriatric Medicine and a fellow of the American Geriatrics Society and of the American College of Physicians.

Additional Cedars-Sinai experts attending the meeting and available for interviews include:

  • Zaldy Tan, MD, MPH , medical director of the Jona Goldrich Center for Alzheimer's and Memory Disorders and director of the Memory and Healthy Aging Program, will present late-breaking research on modifiable risk factors for Alzheimer's disease in middle-aged persons, and the poor health outcomes of hospitalized patients with dementia. Tan conducted this research in collaboration with Nabeel Qureshi, PhD, a research scientist at Cedars-Sinai.
  • Nicolas Musi, MD , vice chair of Translational Research in the Department of Medicine and director of the Diabetes and Aging Center and the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, can discuss his research into treating frail older adults with metformin and senolytic agents.
  • Mitzi Gonzales, PhD , director of Translational Research in the Jona Goldrich Center for Alzheimer's and Memory Disorders in the Department of Neurology, can discuss how a patient's stage of Alzheimer's disease changes the effectiveness of a common treatment called rapamycin.
  • Hiroshi Gotanda, MD, PhD , geriatrician and assistant professor of Medicine, can discuss his research on whether older adults who get hip fracture surgery at "Age-Friendly" hospitals have better outcomes.
  • Allison Moser Mays, MD, MAS , geriatrician and assistant professor of Medicine, can discuss her research on long-term trends in loneliness, based on 40 years of data.
  • James Kirkland, MD, PhD , professor and director of the Center for Advanced Gerotherapeutics at Cedars-Sinai and principal investigator of the National Institutes of Health Translational Geroscience Network-which enables over 85 clinical trials across the U.S. and around the world to study interventions targeting fundamental aging mechanisms-can discuss these ongoing clinical trials to prevent, delay and treat age-related diseases.
