Born with a passion for helping others, Dr. Patel spent eight years as a surgeon in England before moving to the United States in 1968 to continue his training in cardiovascular surgery. Shortly thereafter, he joined the U.S. Air Force as a lieutenant colonel, using his surgical expertise in service to his adopted country. His commitment to caring for others extended beyond his professional responsibilities, including volunteer medical work in Brazil alongside three fellow surgeons.
Service was also at the heart of the Patels' life together. After retiring to Mooresburg, Tennessee, they dedicated countless hours to helping their community, including delivering meals to older adults living in rural areas.
Today, Dr. Patel still resides in his Tennessee farmhouse, where he enjoys the company of his parrot. His days are filled with reading at the library, volunteering, and pursuing hobbies that include collecting coasters, matchboxes and restaurant menus from his favorite dining spots.
During visits to Shriners Children's Lexington, he is continually inspired by the care provided to young patients. He is particularly impressed by the medical center's advanced technology, including an innovative X-ray system that can reduce a child's radiation exposure by up to 75%.
Dr. Patel's remarkable gift is a testament to the lasting power of compassion, service and generosity. By honoring Lorene's memory, he is helping ensure that future generations of children receive the specialized care they need and deserve. Through his support, her spirit of kindness will continue to touch lives for years to come.
