Public Notice: Update: Lake Hollingsworth Water Sampling Begins After Fish Kill

Lakeland, FL (May 13, 2026) - Today, the City of Lakeland's Public Works Department collected a water sample at Lake Hollingsworth to assist the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission with efforts to evaluate the cause of dead fish in the lake.

Yesterday, Public Works staff responded to reports of a fish kill at the lake and notified state officials. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission informed the City that they have been getting reports of gizzard shad fish deaths in lakes across the region possibly due to current warm temperatures and dry weather conditions.

More details will be provided as the information becomes available.
