VIENNA, 24 June (UN Information Service) - The International Narcotics Control Board (INCB) has re-elected Prof. H. H. Sevil Atasoy as its President at its 146th session.
INCB commenced its 146th session on 22 June with a meeting of its Standing Committee on Estimates, which reviewed estimated requirements for controlled substances for licit purposes as submitted by governments. The system of estimates and assessments is critical in ensuring that internationally controlled narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances and precursor chemicals are available for medical, scientific and industrial purposes.
On 23 June, the Board re-elected Prof. Atasoy as its President and elected a new Bureau for a one-year term.

The President congratulated the new officers on their election and thanked the Members of the Board for their engagement and trust. Prof. Atasoy also expressed her gratitude to Member States and other partners for their ongoing cooperation, which is essential to improving the implementation of the drug control conventions and safeguarding health and welfare.

INCB is the independent, quasi-judicial body charged with promoting and monitoring Government compliance with the three international drug control conventions: the 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs, the 1971 Convention on Psychotropic Substances, and the 1988 Convention against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances. Established by the Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs of 1961, the thirteen members of the Board are elected in a personal capacity by the Economic and Social Council for terms of five years.
