WASHINGTON-The Legal Services Corporation (LSC) has released "By the Numbers: The Data Underlying Legal Aid Programs." The report provides an overview of the work of LSC-funded legal services organizations on behalf of low-income Americans seeking civil legal assistance.

It includes data on the services LSC-funded legal aid organizations provided around the country in 2024, as well as information on client demographics, program staffing, revenue, expenses and involvement by private attorneys.

"This report shows the tremendous impact LSC's grantees have by helping Americans navigate critical civil legal problems that go to the heart of their safety and security," said LSC President Ron Flagg. "It reaffirms the essential role of congressional funding in sustaining this vital work."

Building on last year's 10-year high in the number of cases closed, LSC grantees closed 772,511 cases in 2024 - an increase from 2023 - and helped more than 1.8 million people nationwide.

Housing cases continued to dominate. These cases, driven by evictions, remained the most common type of case, with 288,000 (37.2%) closed. This is the fourth year in a row that housing cases have comprised such a large percentage.

The report continues to demonstrate the tremendous legal need among older Americans, especially older women. The number of clients aged 60 and over increased to 171,572 in 2024. The number of veteran households served also grew to 34,205.

Throughout the year, LSC grantees also provided legal education or information to 1.7 million individuals at presentations, events, court help desks and other venues.
