The curriculum focuses on science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM) interactive challenges that allow students to work individually and in teams. Projects focus on things like robotics, coding and problem-solving. Camp College combines these hands-on activities with opportunities for students to explore future educational and career pathways in a supportive college environment.
Students will also connect with current Illinois College students serving as camp facilitators. Education majors at IC will guide activities throughout the program, giving campers the chance to learn alongside college mentors while providing IC students with additional teaching and leadership experience.
"Camp College is designed to give students early exposure to both STEAM education and the college experience," said Julia Carter, director of the program. "We want students to see themselves on a college campus, explore new interests and begin thinking about future academic and career opportunities."
Programming will also include sessions focused on college admissions, choosing a major and career readiness. Illinois College staff members will help students and families better understand the college search process and introduce resources available that support future success.
The camp offers both commuter and overnight options. It runs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on June 15 and from 8 a.m. to noon on June 16 with a participation fee of $50 per camper. Rising sophomores through seniors may participate in an optional overnight experience in the college residence halls on June 15th for an additional $25. Meals are included for all participants.
With support from the Jacksonville Promise Scholarship program, registration fees will be waived for students who qualify for free or reduced-price lunch under the National School Lunch Program. Transportation assistance may also be available for students who need shuttle service to campus.
Camp College is primarily targeted toward students in west central Illinois, though interested students from surrounding communities are also welcome to register.
More information, including registration details and a full schedule, is available at www.ic.edu/CampCollege.
