Dauphin County to Begin PA Route 225 Widening at Detweiler Park

MIDDLE PAXTON TOWNSHIP, Pa., Sept. 3, 2026 - Dauphin County expects construction on PA Route 225 (Peters Mountain Road) at Detweiler Park to begin Tuesday, September 8 and be completed by October 31, 2026.

The project will widen PA Route 225 at the park entrance and construct dedicated left- and right-turn lanes, along with associated stormwater and traffic safety improvements. PA Route 225 is a state-owned roadway, and improvements are required by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) to accommodate the County's planned development of a new park entrance and visitor amenities at Detweiler Park.

These roadway improvements will provide the infrastructure necessary for the County to move forward with the planned development. Future phases of the Detweiler Park project are planned to include a new entrance driveway, parking lot, pavilion, accessible restroom and accessible loop trail. Together, these improvements will create a more welcoming and accessible arrival area while establishing a central location from which visitors can enjoy the park's trails and natural landscape.

The Dauphin County Board of Commissioners awarded the road construction contract to Kinsley Construction for $481,800.

During construction, visitors and motorists should expect temporary traffic-control measures, construction activity near the park entrance and possible delays along PA Route 225. Detweiler Park is expected to remain open during construction, and visitors should use caution when approaching the park and follow all posted traffic-control signage.

Detweiler Park encompasses more than 400 acres in Middle Paxton Township and offers hiking trails, woodlands, meadows and opportunities for passive outdoor recreation.
