Shoulder expansion on Interstate 72 and I-172 in Adams and Pike counties begins Oct. 1

QUINCY - The Illinois Department of Transportation announced an almost 8.5-mile shoulder improvement project on Interstate 72 and I-172 from Illinois 57 to Illinois 96 in southern Adams County and northern Pike County begins Thursday, Oct. 1. The $9 million project is estimated to be completed next summer.

The project includes shoulder resurfacing and widening at emergency median crossovers. Interstate lane closures are expected. Signs and flaggers will be used to direct traffic through the work zones. Work will cease during winter and resume in the spring. Benefits to the public include safer areas for emergencies and improved access for emergency vehicles and tow truck operators. ​

Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changing conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment. Motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes to avoid the area if possible.

Over the next six years, IDOT is planning to improve 7,107 lane miles of highway and 8.4 million square feet of bridge deck as part of Rebuild Illinois, which is investing $33.2 billion into all modes of transportation. Accomplishments through Year Seven of Rebuild Illinois include $25.6 billion of improvements statewide to 24,498 lane miles of highway, 959 bridges and 1,475 additional safety improvements.
