Democrats have the momentum in Iowa and across the country, Republicans are afraid to face the music with their voters
Today, on the heels of the fourth double-digit Democratic overperformance in Iowa this year, Iowa Republican Senator Joni Ernst announced that she is forgoing running for reelection.
A few months ago, Ernst responded to her constituents' concerns about Iowans suffering from the Medicaid and SNAP cuts in Trump and Senate Republicans' budget bill by callously remarking, "Well, we all are going to die."
With Republicans voting to pass Trump's budget betrayal that takes away health care and food benefits from millions of people across the country, including hundreds of thousands of Iowans, Republicans everywhere are running scared from Donald Trump's reckless agenda.
In response to Joni Ernst's decision to forgo running for reelection, DNC Chair Ken Martin issued the following statement:
"A few months ago, Joni Ernst said the quiet part out loud: Republicans don't give a shit about whether their own constituents live or die, as long as the richest few get richer. That's precisely why they rammed through a budget bill that would rip away health care and food from millions of Americans, including kids and seniors across Iowa. As Democrats surge in Iowa, Ernst decided to leave the Senate rather than face the music with voters. Democrats have momentum everywhere while Republicans are running away from Trump's devastating agenda."
