A new digital home for Transformative Spaces on the Blue Line

We're delighted to share some exciting news: the Transformative Spaces learning community - part of the NewWork network, the UN's grassroots movement for culture change - now has a dedicated home designed to help colleagues connect, co-create and learn together on UNSSC's the Blue Line.

This initiative builds on the long-standing spirit of the Blue Line as a space where UN colleagues can come together across continents, organizations and roles to share experiences and grow collectively. With the introduction of dedicated community spaces on the platform, there are now even more opportunities to exchange ideas, explore emerging practices, and collaborate around shared interests and goals.

The Transformative Spaces community is one of the first to launch, and it embodies exactly what this new feature was built for.

All UN personnel are invited to join for free by creating an account on the Blue Line, if they don't already have one.

The power of learning through community

At UNSSC, we believe that meaningful learning happens through exchange and connection. When people come together in a safe, inclusive space to share experiences, explore challenges and co-create solutions, learning becomes more than an individual pursuit - it becomes a collective force for transformation.

The Blue Line's new Communities feature offers precisely this: a digital environment that supports collaboration and connection across the entire UN system. It provides the digital foundation for learning through dialogue and co-creation, helping amplify the impact of transformative initiatives such as NewWork's Transformative Spaces.

This collaboration reflects a shared belief in the value of community as a driver of both individual and organizational change. By uniting the Blue Line's digital capacity with the knowledge and methodologies of Transformative Spaces, we are aiming to create fertile ground for innovation and transformation to grow system-wide.

What is Transformative Spaces?

Transformative Spaces is aNewWork initiative that cultivates the conditions needed for transformative change within the UN. It convenes safe and inclusive environments where colleagues can experience participatory, people-centred methods for addressing complex challenges.

The initiative fosters five essential levers for systemic change: psychological safety, trust, inclusion, reflection and deep listening. Research demonstrates the tangible impact of this approach - with psychological safety alone shown to be the most critical factor for team performance, according to Google's Project Aristotle. Meanwhile, high-trust teams outperform low-trust teams by over 100%.

By bringing these principles to life, Transformative Spaces helps UN personnel develop the skills, mindsets and connections needed to build a more agile, responsive and people-focused UN - one that aligns with the vision for UN transformation.

A partnership that amplifies impact

The partnership between the Blue Line and Transformative Spaces is more than a digital collaboration - it reflects and reinforces a broader shift toward informal, community-driven learning.

Adopting this new approach positions learning as a true strategic enabler across the UN system. By learning together as a community, UN personnel can connect more deeply with one another, collaborate more effectively across entities, and exchange the kind of practical, real-world insights that only come from experience.

Rather than relying solely on individual development, this approach harnesses the collective expertise of the workforce, creating richer understanding and more sustainable capability development. By embracing discussion, peer exchange and shared problem-solving, the UN can enhance institutional learning, accelerate adaptation, and foster a more connected and resilient system.

"I truly valued the safe spaces created in the breakout rooms, where deep listening fosters empathy and challenges our unconscious biases", said a participant in their feedback.

Community as the heart of transformation

What makes this partnership so special is its emphasis on community. Transformation - whether at the individual, team or system level - begins with relationships built on trust, openness and shared purpose.

Through the Transformative Spaces community on the Blue Line, UN personnel will have the opportunity to:

  • Connect with colleagues from across the UN system;

  • Experience inclusive and participatory methods for collaboration;

  • Exchange ideas and co-create solutions to complex challenges;

  • Build ongoing networks of support that sustain learning beyond any single workshop or event;

  • Access new co-designed tools - coming soon!

In doing so, the community embodies the very values of NewWork: collaboration over silos, people over processes, and learning through action.

Join the Movement

All UN personnel are warmly invited to join the Transformative Spaces community on the Blue Line. Membership is open and free for all colleagues across the UN system. If you don't yet have an account, simply create one on the Blue Line and become part of this dynamic, global network of changemakers.

Together, we can build stronger connections, foster inclusive learning and amplify the impact of transformation across the UN system.

If you're part of a UN community looking for a digital home, we'd love to welcome you. The Blue Line is growing, and we're excited to host new groups where UN colleagues can exchange ideas, explore shared interests and strengthen our collective capacity.
