The Commission plans to amend the basic Organic Regulation ((EU) 2018/848) by the end of 2025, which will present an opportunity to correct the situation and align the regulation with the position of Parliament, as co-legislator.

In 2023, Parliament vetoed the Commission's proposal for a delegated act on production rules for 'organic salt'. It considered there to be a fundamental incompatibility with the principles of organic production and a potential to severely distort the market, among other things.

  • 1.Will the Commission, in its forthcoming amendment, propose the deletion of 'sea salt and other salts' from Annex I to Regulation (EU) 2018/848?
  • 2.Otherwise, how does the Commission justify the continued inclusion of salt, an inorganic mineral, in an agricultural regulation?
  • 3.Has the Commission assessed the possible side effects of creating a 'premium organic' salt category, which could have the potential to confuse consumers and undermine public health campaigns, such as the recommendation of the World Health Organization's Regional Office for Europe to use iodised salt to combat iodine deficiency?
