The University of Minnesota Crookston is proud to announce that Kenneth Mendez, Post Office Manager, has been selected as a recipient of the 2026 University of Minnesota President's Award for Outstanding Service.
Ken MendezPresented annually, the President's Award for Outstanding Service recognizes active and retired faculty and staff who have gone above and beyond their regular duties to provide exceptional service to the University of Minnesota community. Mendez was one of 12 individuals across the University of Minnesota System selected for the prestigious honor this year.
Mendez and the other award recipients were recognized at a reception on June 25 at the Bell Museum in Saint Paul, Minn.
In announcing the recipients, University of Minnesota President Rebecca Cunningham praised the award winners for their enduring commitment to the University's mission and their extraordinary contributions to their campuses, colleges, and departments.
Mendez has served as UMN Crookston's Post Office Manager since 2012. As a 2011 graduate of UMN Crookston, he is known for his dedication to customer service, operational excellence, and meaningful connections with students, faculty, and staff.
While his role includes overseeing daily mail operations, managing student employees, and coordinating with postal service providers, Mendez's impact on campus extends far beyond the responsibilities of his position.
"Ken is one of those rare individuals who not only excels in his role but whose commitment, creativity, and generosity enrich the very fabric of our campus community," said Chancellor Mary Holz-Clause in her nomination letter. "His work exemplifies the spirit of the University of Minnesota's mission - service, inclusivity, and transformation through education."
Throughout his career, Mendez has created opportunities for learning, engagement, and cultural enrichment for the campus and the surrounding community. He has coordinated and led numerous arts, theater, and cultural initiatives, including Cinco de Mayo celebrations, theatrical productions, art exhibits, and educational events featuring nationally recognized speakers.
Among his many contributions, Mendez played a leading role in the development of the Roots of the Red River Valley exhibit, which showcased historical photographs documenting the region's migrant worker heritage and the 1937 sugar beet harvest. The exhibit attracted statewide attention and served as both an educational resource and a community gathering point.
Mendez has also been instrumental in bringing notable speakers and performers to campus, including Pulitzer Prize winner Taylor Branch, former Major League Baseball star Darryl Strawberry, and Grammy Award-winning musician Mike Farris. Through partnerships, fundraising efforts, and community collaboration, he has expanded opportunities for students and community members to engage with inspiring voices and experiences.
In addition to his community engagement efforts, Mendez is widely recognized for his mentorship of students. Through his work in the campus post office, he has supervised and guided numerous student employees, helping them develop professional skills while offering encouragement and support throughout their college experience.
"While the mailroom wouldn't be the same without Ken, neither would the University or the experiences of the people who call it home," wrote alumna Lauren (Wallace) Riemersma 2021 in her nomination letter. "He created learning experiences and opportunities for our campus community not because he would be compensated for it, but out of passion."
Reflecting on his commitment to the University, Mendez has said, "I have been forever changed by this campus, and it is my goal to give back in the ways I can."
The University of Minnesota Crookston congratulates Mendez on this well-deserved recognition and thanks him for his years of outstanding service, leadership, and dedication to the campus community.
