City of Fremont Receives $3M in State Funding To Support Transitional Homeless Shelter Services

Last week, the Governor signed budget trailer bill, AB 113, which included a one-time $3 million allocation from our state legislators, Assemblymember Alex Lee and former Senator Dr. Aisha Wahab to help extend the City's Winter Relief Program from five months to twelve. This is a significant funding award, and a demonstration of the City's commitment to addressing one of the City Council's highest priorities.

This funding will enhance the City's ability to meet local shelter needs, promote safety, and provide a more supportive environment for all residents.

Over the last two years and in alignment with the City's Homelessness Response Plan, the Winter Relief Program has been leveraged to responsibly address two of Fremont's largest homeless encampments, Vallejo Mill and Isherwood. Each year, the Winter Relief Program relies on a combination of funding sources and has previously only funded a partial year program. This new funding will help the City once again fully resolve one or more of the community's largest encampments.

The City has long advocated for additional funding from county, state, and federal agencies for increased shelter capacity to further address homelessness in the community. We are deeply appreciative of the support from our state representatives and hopeful that future Measure W funding will provide a sustainable source of funding for an ongoing year-round transitional shelter program aligned with Alameda County's Home Together Plan.
