Millersville University will host the ninth annual Disability Pride on April 11 from noon to 9 p.m. at the Student Memorial Center. This free event is open to the community, students, faculty and staff. Under the theme "Disability Justice is Social Justice," it will promote awareness, advocacy and inclusion for people with disabilities.
The day will feature a number of speakers, including Misty Dion from the Roads to Freedom Center for Independent Living, Vicki Landers from Disability Pride PA and Theo Braddy from the National Council on Independent Living. Guests can also take part in group activities, like sign-making, and participate in an open mic where they can share their stories. At 4 p.m., those in attendance can enjoy two musical performances by the acapella student organization Ville Harmonics, along with the musical stylings of indie rock band Black Cat Habitat.
Following a 6 p.m. screening of the documentary "Rising Phoenix: A New Revolution" in the Multi-Purpose Room of the Student Memorial Center, attendees will have the chance to hear from the film's director Sheridan O'Donnell, and James LeBrecht, executive producer. The documentary follows O'Donnell's journey to connect with the disability community after developing a low vision disability. There will be a moderated discussion with the pair, along with an open time for questions and answers at the end.
