As upstream oil and gas operations evolve, operators are increasingly challenged to manage higher water production rates, changing reservoir conditions, and rising operating costs while maintaining safe and reliable production.
A recent article by Jeff Gomach, SVP of Technology published in the Journal of Petroleum Technology (JPT) examined how produced water, traditionally viewed as a waste stream requiring management and disposal, may also play a valuable role in hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) treatment.
The article highlights a Permian Basin field demonstration of Merichem Technologies' ECOTREAT® process, which evaluated the use of both alkaline water and produced water as part of a regenerative H₂S treatment system.
A Changing Upstream Landscape
According to the article, many operators are moving beyond the highest-quality drilling inventory and into increasingly challenging reservoirs. These developments often bring higher water production, greater associated gas volumes, impurities like H₂S and increased operating complexity.
At the same time, water management costs continue to rise, creating interest in technologies that can make effective use of resources already available at the wellsite.
This combination of operational and economic pressures is driving innovation in sulfur treatment and gas conditioning technologies.
Why It Matters
As upstream operations evolve, sulfur treatment decisions increasingly intersect with broader operational considerations, including water management, waste handling, logistics, and overall field economics.
The field trial also demonstrated the potential to utilize resources already available at the wellsite while effectively treating hydrogen sulfide in produced gas streams.
The full article provides additional technical details on the field trial, operating conditions, and performance results for H₂S treating with produced water or alkaline water.
