Elizabethtown Gas Reminds Residents to Prioritize Safe Digging on National 811 Day

UNION, NJ, August 11, 2026 - Today is National 811 Day, and Elizabethtown Gas, a subsidiary of SJI, wants to remind residents to dial 811 before starting any digging project. This free call ensures underground utility lines are properly marked out.

By law, homeowners and contractors are required to dial 811 at least three full business days before digging - whether installing a mailbox, building a deck, planting a tree, or laying a patio. When dialing 811, callers connect to New Jersey One Call, the state center that notifies the appropriate utility companies of the caller's intent to dig. Professional locators are then sent to the proposed digging site to mark the approximate locations of underground lines with flags or spray paint.

"Safety is paramount for everything we do at SJI," said Steven Cocchi, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, SJI. "On National 811 Day and every day of the year, we remind our customers and contractors that reaching out to 811 is a fast, free, and vital step to avoid service disruptions and protect the communities we serve." Whenever you're planning a project that requires digging in your yard (gardening, landscaping, home improvements, demolition, etc.), call 811 or visit 811beforeyoudig.com first, and take the following precautions:

  • Have utility lines marked before you dig.
  • Avoid damage to underground lines that could cause service disruption, property damage, or injury.
  • Plan in advance to avoid damage, repairs, project delays and costly fines.

Elizabethtown Gas will be at Home Depot, 373 US Highway 9 S, Woodbridge, NJ, on August 12 from 10am - 3pm to provide giveaways for 811 Day.
