Iowa State Treasurer Roby Smith is highlighting the growing impact of IAble and its ABLE to Work provision. The tool allows Iowans with a disability who are employed to save more of what they earn while protecting access to critical means-tested benefits.
In 2026, eligibility for IAble accounts was expanded. As a result, plan administrators are seeing more account holders sign-up for ABLE to Work. The tool is a key feature that allows eligible account owners who are working to contribute additional income to their IAble accounts beyond the standard annual limit of $20,000. This expansion gives working Iowans with disabilities a powerful opportunity to build financial stability, grow savings and plan for the future.
"ABLE to Work has been a game-changer for IAble account owners who can benefit," said State Treasurer Roby Smith. "It allows Iowans to keep more of what they earn and turn their hard work into savings for the expenses of today and tomorrow."
State Treasurer Smith emphasizes ABLE to Work is especially beneficial for individuals who are actively employed and seeking to maintain assets while keeping access to critical programs like Medicaid. In addition, family members, friends and even employers can contribute to IAble accounts, further strengthening financial stability for account owners.
