White Rock Lake eagle nesting area reopens

Dallas, Texas - Temporary fencing around the White Rock Lake bald eagle nest has been removed after the Dallas Park and Recreation Department confirmed the eagles are no longer using the nest area.

"By respecting the temporary protections, everyone gave the young eagles the space they needed to grow. We appreciate everyone's cooperation during the nesting season," Johnson said. "We encourage visitors to continue enjoying the park and its wildlife from a respectful distance."

Two of the three eaglets have already left the area. The remaining eaglet and the adult eagles are now spending most of their time away from the nest and have been seen throughout White Rock Lake and along White Rock Creek.

"This year's nesting season has been a tremendous success, with all three eaglets successfully leaving the nest. The last eaglet is expected to leave the area in the coming weeks," said Brett Johnson, park department conservation manager. "That's normal behavior for young bald eagles as they become more and more independent."

The adults are exploring other areas and searching for food near White Rock Lake and White Rock Creek. If the eagles follow their normal seasonal pattern, they are expected to return to the lake nesting area around mid-October. Johnson and the conservation staff will begin monitoring their activity at that time in preparation for the next nesting season.
