Taking a European initiative for a just and sustainable solution to the Cyprus question, in line with international efforts for the Palestinian issue

Question for written answer E-004000/2025
to the Commission
Rule 144
Nikolaos Anadiotis (NI)

The European Union actively supports the initiative for a just and sustainable solution to the Palestinian question, based on the principles of international law, respect for territorial integrity, the return of displaced persons and the withdrawal of foreign troops.[1]

However, the Republic of Cyprus, an EU Member State, has remained under military occupation by a non-EU state for 51 years. Furthermore, tens of thousands of Cypriot refugees are still denied the right to return to their properties. Finally, thousands of Turkish settlers have been illegally transferred to the occupied territories, in violation of the Geneva Conventions.

In view of the above:

  • 1.Does the Commission intend to undertake a corresponding political and diplomatic initiative for a just and sustainable solution to the Cyprus issue, on the basis of the withdrawal of Turkish troops and the return of displaced Cypriots?
  • 2.How does the Commission intend to ensure the application of the European acquis and the principles of international law throughout the territory of the Republic of Cyprus?
  • 3.Does the Commission consider that the continuation of the occupation and settlement is compatible with the values and law of the European Union and with its recent positions in favour of the withdrawal of troops and the return of refugees on other international fronts, such as the Palestinian one?
