Public invited to provide input on U.S. 67 (Centennial Bridge) corridor project

ROCK ISLAND - The Illinois Department of Transportation, in partnership with the Iowa Department of Transportation, will host a public meeting for the U.S. 67 (Centennial Bridge) corridor project on Wednesday, May 20. The event will be from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Rock Island-Quad Cities, 226 17th St., Rock Island. There will be no formal presentation, and the public is invited to attend any time during the hours listed.

The Centennial Bridge has served as a vital connection between Rock Island and Davenport, Iowa, for more than 85 years. Due to aging infrastructure and ongoing maintenance needs, IDOT and Iowa DOT are conducting a corridor study to identify long-term solutions that improve safety, traffic flow and overall connectivity for the Quad Cities region. The study limits extend from Fifth Street in Davenport to Seventh Avenue in Rock Island.

Since the last public meeting, the alternatives were further refined and evaluated based on several criteria, including purpose and need, design life, environmental and community impacts, temporary and long-term traffic impacts, and cost. Based on this analysis and public input, the potential alternatives have been narrowed to those that best meet the purpose and need while minimizing environmental and community impacts.

All public input is being documented and used to inform the project team's evaluation of corridor improvements. Comments received by June 3 will be included in the official meeting record.

The project is currently in Phase I, which follows federal guidelines to assess transportation needs, develop and evaluate alternatives, identify and mitigate potential environmental impacts, and gather public input. The goal is to identify a feasible solution that improves safety, mobility and connectivity while supporting the region's long-term transportation needs. The Phase I study is expected to conclude in summer 2027.

Over the next six years, IDOT is planning to improve 7,107 lane miles of highway and 8.4 million square feet of bridge deck as part of Rebuild Illinois, which is investing $33.2 billion into all modes of transportation. Accomplishments through Year Six of Rebuild Illinois include almost $20.8 billion of improvements statewide to 21,309 lane miles of highway, 815 bridges and 1,181 additional safety improvements.
