Menlo Park prepares for the next big one in the Great Shakeout Oct. 15

Published on October 12, 2026

Are you ready for the next earthquake? Earthquakes can happen without warning, and knowing what to do when the ground starts shaking can save lives.

Thursday, Oct. 15, at 10:15 a.m., Menlo Park residents, schools and businesses are encouraged to participate in the annual Great California ShakeOut.

The ShakeOut is an opportunity to practice three simple actions that can protect you during an earthquake:

  • DROP to your hands and knees before the shaking knocks you down.
  • COVER your head and neck under a sturdy desk or table, if available.
  • HOLD ON to your shelter until the shaking stops.

If you are indoors, stay inside during the shaking and avoid windows or objects that could fall. Practicing these actions now can help you react quickly when seconds matter.

Take a few minutes to prepare

A major earthquake could disrupt electricity, water, transportation and communications for days. Being prepared helps protect your household and allows emergency responders to focus on those with the greatest needs.

Start with five simple steps:

  • Make a plan: Know how your family will communicate and reconnect if separated.
  • Build a kit: Keep water, food, medications and essential supplies for several days or longer.
  • Secure your space: Anchor heavy furniture and identify objects that could fall.
  • Stay informed: Register for SMC Alert to receive emergency notifications.
  • Help your neighbors: Connect with those who may need additional assistance following a disaster.

Your City is preparing, too

On Oct. 15, Menlo Park will activate its Emergency Operations Center as part of a countywide exercise involving San Mateo County and other participating jurisdictions. The exercise will test how agencies coordinate resources, support emergency responders and share critical information following a major earthquake.

Preparedness begins with you

While local governments practice their response, take time to practice yours. The next earthquake will not wait until we are ready, but the actions we take today can make all the difference tomorrow.
