Welcoming the EOSC Federation, a major milestone for open science

The demonstration of an operational EOSC Federation, celebrated during the EOSC Symposium 2025 in Brussels, marks a major step toward the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) vision turning into reality. 13 candidate EOSC Nodes demonstrated scientific use cases, based on their connection among each other and together with the EOSC EU Node managed by the European Commission.

The first wave of 13 nodes includes major research organisations such as CERN and EMBL, several ESFRI Landmarks and ERICs, and essential national research data initiatives. Together, they will pave the way for a coordinated and accessible environment for storing, sharing, and analysing research data and resources across Europe.

By offering specialised services and data, each node will contribute to a coherent Europe-wide network, giving researchers tangible advantages such as better access to high-quality FAIR datasets, smoother cross-border collaboration, and greater opportunities for interdisciplinary research. The Federation is also a key enabler for the uptake of AI in science and an important element of RAISE, the Resource for AI science in Europe.

Welcoming the Federation was a central highlight of the EOSC Symposium 2025, the main annual gathering of the EOSC community, which brought together researchers research performing organisations, research infrastructures, funders and policy makers.

During the event, a memorandum of understanding was introduced to formalise the collaboration among the first-wave nodes, marking their joint commitment to building the EOSC Federation. Looking ahead, the Symposium also announced the next opening for further nodes to join the build-up of the EOSC Federation and next steps towards supporting EOSC beyond 2027.

By connecting Europe's research capacities through an integrated network, the EOSC Federation strengthens Europe's leadership in open, trusted, and data-driven science. It not only supports innovation and interdisciplinary research but also enhances strategic autonomy, sovereignty and global competitiveness.
