Thoracic Surgeon joins UNC Health Southeastern

Thoracic Surgeon Rajat Kumar, MD, has joined UNC Health Southeastern Cardiology and Cardiovascular Care and the medical staff of UNC Health Southeastern.

His areas of interest include minimally invasive and robotic thoracic surgery, lung cancer, lung nodules, mediastinal mass, pneumothorax/collapsed lung, and pleural effusion.

"While I was interested in medicine and surgery at an early age, my interest in general thoracic surgery peaked early in my surgical internship," said Dr. Kumar. "Having good mentors and exposure to a broad range of pathology and surgical cases led me to realize that I had found what I wanted to do. I found that thoracic surgery provided an ideal combination of patient-focused, technically challenging clinical care and continuous advancements in the field."

Dr. Kumar completed his medical degree at Ross University in 2011. He completed a general surgery residency at UNC Hospitals in 2017 and a cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2019. He is board certified in both thoracic and general surgery.

"As a general thoracic surgeon with an interest in minimally invasive surgery, I strive to provide every patient with the information they need to make the best and most informed decisions about their care," Dr. Kumar added. "I take pride in discussing treatment options thoroughly and ensuring that my patients feel as informed and comfortable as possible, even when surgery is not the right answer for them. I always aim to offer minimally invasive surgical options when appropriate and enjoy collaborating with our multidisciplinary team of specialists to care for thoracic oncology patients."

To schedule an appointment with Dr. Kumar at UNC Health Southeastern Cardiology and Cardiovascular Care, which is located inside Southeastern Health Mall on the campus of Biggs Park Mall at 2936 N. Elm St., Suite 102, Lumberton, call (910) 671-6619.
