WASHINGTON, DC - Congresswoman Johnson (TX-32) released the following statement on the Republican government shutdown:
"Republicans put forward a bill that eviscerates health care for millions of Americans by refusing to extend the Affordable Care Act's tax credits-tax credits that nearly 100,000 of my constituents depend on to afford coverage. I will never vote for a bill that actively harms the people I represent," said Johnson. "Starting today, insurance companies will send out notices warning families that their premiums will skyrocket. For many working families, this isn't just an inconvenience; it's a life-or-death issue. Republicans have manufactured a crisis that puts health care out of reach for millions, in exchange for tax cuts for the wealthiest billionaires. I am calling on Republicans to come back to Washington and work with us to pass a funding bill that reopens the government and protects affordable health care. The time to act is now. My constituents and families across this country cannot wait any longer."
This specific government shutdown is a full shutdown, meaning "non-essential" government operations and services have ended because the Republican-controlled Congress failed to pass the necessary spending bills to fund them.
