Rep. Sheehan Rebukes Gov. Pritzker and Mayor Johnson Over Chicago Violence Response

September 2, 2025

Homer Glen, IL…Following Governor J.B. Pritzker's press conference today rejecting federal assistance to address rising violence in Chicago, State Representative Patrick Sheehan issued a statement condemning the Governor's refusal to act.

"Over Labor Day weekend, at least 58 people were shot in Chicago. Eight lives lost. A 17-year-old girl struck inside her own home. A 31-year-old bystander caught in crossfire. Seven wounded in a single drive-by in Bronzeville. Thirty-seven separate shooting incidents in just four days," Rep. Sheehan said. "And their response? Governor Pritzker and Mayor Johnson doubled down on their public safety policies and stated there is no emergency. Clearly 8 dead and 58 people shot is NOT an acceptable public safety policy. It's tone deaf and extremely dangerous."

President Trump earlier today reiterated his intent to send federal support to Chicago, promising swift action to address crime. Governor Pritzker pushed back, saying federal troops are not needed and that no coordination has occurred with his office. Rep. Sheehan disagreed, calling for immediate cooperation and a focus on solutions over rhetoric.

"Gov. Pritzker and Mayor Johnson engaged in a lot of double-talk today," Rep. Sheehan said. "They attempted to affirm their commitment to public safety, but where was the funding for police recruitment and retention in the FY26 budget? Nowhere to be seen. Blaming guns instead of their catch and release policies. Public safety isn't a partisan issue it is a fundamental right. Everyone Illinoisan deserves to feel safe in their own homes and neighborhoods, and right now, that fundamental right is being ignored."

Rep. Sheehan proudly serves the people of the 37th District.
