Railroad Crossing Safety Improvement Project on Route 154 in Essex

9/26/2025

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is alerting the public that repairs and resurfacing of the railroad crossing on Route 154 (Main Street) in Essex will take place October 7-8, 2025. To ensure the safety of workers and the public, and to facilitate installation of new rail crossing infrastructure, the area near the rail crossings will be closed to all vehicular and pedestrian traffic for approximately 36 hours.

The existing railroad crossing surface on Route 154 is being replaced with all-new materials to enhance safety and provide a smooth passage for motorists.

A detour will be posted to bypass the construction site utilizing Route 153 and Westbrook Road through Centerbrook. Motorists should consider using Exits 3 and 5 on Route 9 to access Route 154 around the closure. All businesses and/or residences along Route 154 will remain accessible.

"This project will address roadway surface condition on the railroad crossing on Route 154. To ensure the safety of everyone, vehicles cannot travel through the work zone. We ask motorists to follow the posted detour routes during this short-term construction project," said Connecticut Department of Transportation Bureau Chief of Public Transportation Benjamin Limmer. "We appreciate the support and collaboration with the Town of Essex, local businesses, and residents while this important safety upgrade takes place."

The project is funded by the Valley Railroad Company, the operator of the rail line.

The work is being performed in coordination between the CTDOT, Town of Essex, first responders, bus and transit providers, and the Valley Railroad Company. Efforts are being taken to minimize the impact on residents and businesses.

Extreme weather may alter the project schedules. Members of the public with questions are encouraged to contact the CTDOT Customer Care Center at (860) 594-2560 or [email protected].
