Brian Whitcomb, professor of epidemiology and chair of the Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology in the School of Public Health and Health Sciences, has been elected to the position of president-elect of the Society for Epidemiologic Research (SER). He will serve a three-year term on the SER Executive Committee as president-elect (2025-26), president (2026-27) and past-president (2027-28). He assumed the position on July 1.
Established in 1968 to foster epidemiologic research, the SER is the oldest and largest general epidemiology society in North America. Its mission is to keep epidemiologists at the vanguard of scientific developments and it sponsors the American Journal of Epidemiology and Epidemiologic Reviews, as well as the annual SER meeting.
Whitcomb's research focuses on the epidemiology of reproductive health, evaluating risk factors for adverse pregnancy outcomes, determinants of fertility and infertility, and epidemiologic methods for biomarkers and laboratory data. During his three-year term, Whitcomb will work with SER's executive committee to plan the organization's annual meetings and mid-year virtual meetings, coordinate society activities - including the SER visits outreach/pipeline program - and contribute to policies and new initiatives.
