In a remarkable showcase of talent and passion, Jaden Conley of Niles West High School was named the 2026 Illinois Poetry Out Loud state champion this week. Competing at Springfield's Hoogland Center for the Arts, Conley impressed judges with his performances of "Mother to Son" by Langston Hughes, "Chicago" by Carl Sandburg, and "Enigma" by Leonora Speyer. Upon receiving his award, Conley shared, "Mrs. (Sally) Graham reminded me to enjoy the moment and to trust the work I already had put in-to perform the way that I've practiced and to let the poem speak for itself." Reflecting on his journey, he added, "I've learned to trust what feels authentic to me, regardless of what anyone else is doing."

Elliana Sheehan from Wheaton-Warrenville South High School secured the runner-up position, guided by her teacher, Craig Lawrence. Fourteen students from across Illinois participated in the state finals, vying for the chance to represent Illinois at the national competition in Washington, D.C., this April.

This year marks the 21st anniversary of Poetry Out Loud , a program that continues to inspire with over 2,900 students participating statewide. The competition is a testament to the dedication of the regional arts agencies and educators in cooperation with the Illinois Arts Council, who continue to foster an appreciation for poetry among young people. 2026 Illinois Poetry Out Loud regional winners include Revolution Chaput, Lana Cooper, Jillian Garcia, Feben Gates, Mikiah Gerrity, Aminah Givens, Rebekah Kreighbaum, Yarely Lopez, Sam Miller, Ace O'Malley, Julia Sohn, and Victoria Syverson.
