City Grants Available for Lead Paint Hazard Reduction

Greensboro's Housing and Neighborhood Development Department (HND) is accepting applications for its Lead Hazard Reduction and Healthy Homes grant program funded by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development. This marks the seventh time the City has received this funding.

Valued at around $4.7 million, the grant will support education for low-income homeowners and renters on the dangers of lead exposure, provide free lead testing, and facilitate repairs that address unsafe lead paint conditions. Through this funding, HND aims to reduce lead hazards in approximately 150 housing units across the city.

Homeowners and landlords may qualify for a City grant for lead hazard assistance if:

  • The property was built before 1978 and is located within Greensboro city limits

  • Household income is below 80 percent of the area median income for the household size

  • A pregnant woman lives in the home, or a child under the age of six lives in or frequently visits the home

Qualified homeowners can apply using the online portal. Once an application is approved, a rehabilitation specialist will inspect the property to assess hazards and determine appropriate repairs through the Lead-Safe Greensboro program. Participating homes may also qualify for additional supplemental funding to address other repair needs.

Greensboro's Lead-Safe Housing program is one of only a few nationwide to receive the federal grant for multiple consecutive years. Under the previous four-year grant, HND funded and facilitated the replacement of deteriorated lead-based paint and provided limited home-repair services in 112 Greensboro residences. Since the program's inception in 2002, the City has restored more than 1,000 homes in low-income areas eliminating critical health risks for residents.

"We are excited to build on the historic success of the Lead-Safe Greensboro program and continue to create healthier homes where children and families can grow and thrive," said Josh Mullins, Lead Safe Housing program manager.
